Among the three kinds of mesothelioma, the form that attacks the mesothelium is the most common; referred to as malignant pleural mesothelioma. The cancer is rare and only fewer than 3000 mesothelioma cases are recorded yearly in the United States. The pleural type, which we are discussing here, is the reason for three-fourths of it. The cancer affects the pleura, a protective sac that guards the lungs. This sac, which shores up the lungs and shields the lung cavity, is made of two layers. The inner lining or the visceral lining sheaths the lungs as the outer one guards the chest cavity and diaphragm. Pleural mesothelioma takes place initially in any one of these layers and may spread into the other one after a period of time. This cancerous growth is caused by asbestos fibers ensnared in the open places between mesothelium cells.
Stuck asbestos debris cause chemical reactions that result in mesothelium cells to fall apart. This results in the pleural layers thickening and create a certain fluid build up, known as the pleural effusion. The excess fluid compresses the lungs and complicates convenient breathing. Persistent dry cough, blood emission while coughing, difficulties with swallowing, breath shortness, abnormal weight loss, fatigue, lump formation around the chest etc are the most visible symptoms of mesothelioma attack.
Symptoms can be confused as something that are caused by other conditions like influenza or pneumonia thus, diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer in effect becomes really difficult. Physicians examine the health history of the sufferer and put him through imaging tests like x-rays, MRI, CT scan and biopsy to determine the type of mesothelioma and its extent of infection.
Typical treatments for malignant pleural mesothelioma are surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Dependent on the severity of the ailment, these treatment methods may be combined to achieve better effects. But mesothelioma prognosis is not always desirably bright since most cases are detected only at highly progressed levels. If determined at the initial stage itself, the patient has more chances of survival.
