On September 10th, the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and the UCSF Thoracic Oncology Program announced that Porsche will be a major collaborator in the October 16, 2011 exclusive Quail Porsche Race Car Classic. This international gathering of vintage Porsche race cars from 1950-1965 will be held in Carmel, California at the famed Quail Lodge and Golf Club to raise critical funding to support lung cancer research and that of related cancers, such as mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, sarcoma and cancer that has metastasized to the chest.
Porsche Company North America (PCNA) and Porsche AG will provide logistical and marketing support, distribution of materials, on-site vehicles and more. Porsche will also bring several special cars from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.
Lung Cancer kills 160,000 people per year in the U.S., more than the other major cancers combined. Despite popular belief, 20% of lung cancer victims have never smoked and 60% are former smokers. Many environmental and genetic factors play into the development of lung cancer. For example, pleural mesothelioma, although technically not lung cancer, but often reported as such because it is a cancer of the lining of the lungs, is generally caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos.
It is anticipated that the Quail Porsche Race Car Classic will sell out, attracting 3,500 attendees. All net proceeds from ticket sales and sponsor contributions will go directly to Lung Cancer research. For more information on this event, please visit http://www.2011porscheracecarclassic.com/.
